What is GEO? Generative engine optimization, explained simply

SEO gets you ranked in search results. GEO gets you mentioned in the answers AI gives. Here's what that means for a business owner.

GEO in one sentence

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants to find, understand, trust and mention when they answer someone's question.

"Generative engines" are tools that write an answer instead of showing a list of links: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and the AI Overviews at the top of many Google searches. You'll also see the same idea called AEO (answer engine optimization) or AI search optimization.

How GEO is different from SEO

They overlap more than people think, but the goal and the scoreboard are different:

  • Goal: SEO aims for a high ranking in a list of results. GEO aims to be named or cited inside the answer itself.
  • Winners: search results show ten or more links. AI answers often name just a few businesses, so being included matters more.
  • Sources: AI answers pull from your site plus listings, reviews and other websites that mention you. Third-party mentions carry a lot of weight.
  • Format: AI favors content that answers a question clearly and directly, with facts it can quote: prices, service areas, hours, specialties.
  • Measurement: you can't rely on a rank number alone. You measure how often you're mentioned, for which questions, next to which competitors, and which sources get cited.

What GEO work actually involves

  1. Access

Make sure AI crawlers can read your site (check robots.txt and security settings), and that key information is in text, not locked in images or PDFs.

  2. Clarity

One clear page per service and main location, with direct answers to common questions and plain statements of what you do and where.

  3. Consistency

The same business name, address, phone, hours and services across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple and directories.

  4. Evidence

Reviews that describe real jobs, plus mentions on trusted local and industry sites that AI assistants cite.

  5. Structure

Schema markup that labels your business type, services, location and reviews in a machine-readable way.

  6. Measurement

Regularly asking the assistants your customers' questions and tracking mentions, competitors and cited sources over time.

Does a local business really need GEO?

If your customers find you through search today, yes, and you likely have a head start. The foundations of GEO are the same things that make local SEO work: good service pages, a complete Google Business Profile, consistent listings and real reviews.

The difference is attention. Most local businesses haven't looked at what AI assistants say about them yet, which means in many towns and trades the spot is still open. Being the business an assistant confidently recommends is a real advantage while competitors aren't paying attention.

  4. Tighten your listings and reviews

Complete and match your profiles everywhere, and ask every happy customer for a specific review.

Questions

Is GEO replacing SEO?+

No. Traditional search is still a major source of customers, and AI assistants rely on much of the same information. Think of GEO as an extension of SEO, not a replacement.

What's the difference between GEO and AEO?+

They're mostly two names for the same idea: optimizing to appear in answers rather than just rankings. "AI search optimization" is another common term.

Can anyone guarantee AI will recommend my business?+

No. AI companies control their answers, and results vary by question, location and time. Anyone promising guaranteed placement isn't being straight with you. What can be done is to improve the signals AI relies on and measure the results.

How do I measure GEO results?+

Track how often you're mentioned for a fixed set of questions across several assistants, which competitors appear, which sources are cited, and how many visits and leads arrive from AI assistants.
