SEO vs. Google Ads for local businesses

How each one works
- Google Ads: you pay to appear at the top for chosen searches, usually per click. Local Services Ads, available in many trades, charge per lead instead.
- SEO: you earn a place in Maps and the regular results through your profile, website, reviews and reputation. You don't pay per click.
Side by side
- Speed: ads can bring clicks the day they go live; SEO usually takes a few months to build
- Ongoing cost: ads cost money for every click; SEO costs the work to earn and keep your position
- When you stop: ad traffic stops immediately; SEO visibility fades slowly, if at all
- Trust: many people skip ads and click the Maps or regular results
- AI answers: ads don't get you recommended by ChatGPT or Google's AI Overviews; SEO foundations do
When each makes sense
- Ads: you're new and need customers now, want to fill a slow season, or promote one service
- SEO: you want steady leads that don't depend on a daily budget, and plan to serve the same area for years
- Both: most growing local businesses, shifting budget as organic visibility grows
Measure both the same way
The only fair comparison is revenue per dollar spent, traced from the first click to the paid job. Without that, ads look good because they're easy to count, and SEO looks slow because its results are spread out.
Questions
Does running Google Ads help my SEO?+
Not directly. Google says ads don't affect organic rankings, though ads can bring visitors who later search for you by name.
Which is cheaper, SEO or ads?+
Over the long run SEO often costs less per lead, because you're not paying for each click. In the short term, ads can be the faster way to get customers.
What are Local Services Ads?+
Google ads for many service trades that appear at the very top, charged per lead rather than per click. Many categories require background and license checks.
